Students’ perspectives on study abroad project management

Several recent studies have provided new insight into the factors that influence students’ participation in study abroad programs. These factors include personality traits, beliefs and norms, self-efficacy and multi-cultural sensitivity. However, these findings are not conclusive, as students’ experiences are highly individual.

One study revealed that the quality of a study abroad program may be affected by the work of the program staff. The student experience may be impacted by the tasks and attitude of the staff. In the case of L University, five different program managers were in place, with significant turnover in staff members. These changes posed challenges for the program’s operations. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey revealed several problematic attitudes and work styles. These factors may negatively impact the overseas experience of students.

Course content

A Master’s in Study Abroad Professional Project Management course covers all the aspects of project management. It focuses on the relationship between projects and strategic objectives, the organizational structure, the profit and loss statement, and quality management. The course content is delivered through a mix of lectures, group work, and presentations. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in applied case studies.

The class includes 10 undergraduate students, 1 graduate student, and a lead professor. The course was successful enough to be repeated in 2002 and 2004, and the next class will be in summer 2005. The paper describes the course content and design, and outlines the learning outcomes.

Instructors

Students studying abroad for study abroad projects can benefit from instructors who are experienced in project management. Unlike a traditional foreign language class, study abroad classes are based on experiential learning. Instructors can develop courses based on a specific industry or topic. They provide guidance and support throughout the development process and work with students outside of class time.
