Summer study abroad scholarships are offered by colleges and universities to help students fund their study abroad experience. Students can apply for these grants to help cover costs associated with travel, lodging, and maintenance. The Gilman International Scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is designed to lower barriers to undergraduate study abroad. It awards up to $5,000 to qualified students for a semester or academic year program.

Another study abroad scholarship worth considering is the David Hershberg Scholarship for Summer Study Abroad. Designed to enable full-time students to travel outside of the United States for at least 21 days, the award includes funds of at least $2,000. In order to be eligible, applicants must have an academic reference on university letterhead and attend a presentation at the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

The Lindmor Scholars Fund is another scholarship program that supports studying abroad. This fund provides financial assistance to undergraduate students who need to go on a service learning, summer internship, or a summer study abroad program.

Aside from the scholarships mentioned above, there are also many other options available. There are scholarship programs for nontraditional study abroad destinations such as Japan, Korea, Ireland, and New Zealand. These scholarships provide the opportunity to explore new cultures while gaining invaluable cultural and language skills.
