A student visa is an official travel document that allows people to legally study in a particular country. There are many types of student visas, depending on your course of study and the type of school you plan to attend.
How to extend your student visa
If you need to extend your visa, it is important to apply quite a few months ahead of the expiry date on your current visa. This is because it takes around 6-8 weeks for the visa application process to be completed.
You can also apply for the priority service to receive a decision within ten working days or the super priority service to get a decision within one working day. These services cost more than standard applications but may be available at the time you apply, so it is worth checking in advance.
How to schedule your interview
You should schedule an interview with the embassy or consulate that is responsible for your visa. This will typically be a one-on-one interview between you and a consular officer. You will be asked to bring a passport, a copy of your visa application and other documents that demonstrate your status as a student.
What to expect at your interview
Once you’ve met all of the requirements for your application, you will be able to schedule your interview. This appointment is usually scheduled between two and three weeks after your application has been received.
Once your application has been accepted, you will be sent a copy of your Form I-20 certificate of eligibility for your program. This will be the documentation that you will need to show your consular officer at the interview.
