New zealand medical universities are a popular choice for international students and there’s a reason for this: they offer a unique, world-class medical education.
The University of Auckland (UoA) is the largest and highest ranked university in New Zealand, and it has a strong reputation for life sciences and medicine. Its MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree is a six-year program, with the first year of study focusing on gaining knowledge and skills in medical science.
At UoA, the MBChB is offered as a degree pathway for both school leavers and graduates. Those applying for a first-year entry pathway must complete a BHSc or BSc in Biomedical Science. They must also achieve a minimum GPA of 6.0 in the first year courses to be considered for admission to the MMI.
After completing the first year, you’ll take a series of clinical skills and communication modules. These will prepare you for the second and third years, which are mainly based in Dunedin and are centred around interacting with people through lectures and practical work.
In the fourth and fifth year of med school, you’ll spend more time in wards and in smaller rural practices. This is an apprenticeship-style year, where you’ll become a more responsible student with increased responsibility and interaction with patients. You’ll also complete public health and community medicine components.
