The PhD in Asian Studies at UBC

asian studies phd

The Department of Asian Studies at UBC offers an interdisciplinary PhD program. This PhD programme focuses on culture and history of East Asia. It also provides intense area studies training. Moreover, it offers a wide range of research opportunities.

In addition to conducting dissertation research in Asia, PhD students are taught specialized research skills. They are also introduced to the joys of teaching. Depending on their interests, they may have the opportunity to teach at a university or conduct publishing opportunities.

For those who are considering pursuing a PhD in Asian Studies, it is important to ensure that they have the proper language training. Generally, a candidate must be able to read, speak, and write fluently in one or more Asian languages.

However, in some cases, an applicant with less language training can choose to earn a Master of Arts in Asian Studies. Applicants can apply online, and they will receive support from the faculty in this program.

Students in this field will be required to give a formal presentation to the faculty at the end of their second year. These presentations serve as an opportunity to monitor their progress. During their third year, they will have the option of taking additional course work.

Interested students should consult with the Department’s graduate advisers. They can learn about funding opportunities for students. Also, prospective candidates should confirm that their faculty advisers are available to supervise their research.

While the PhD course of study requires a total of five to seven years, applicants who have already completed a MA degree in an Asian Studies discipline may take a shorter time. Regardless of the amount of time it takes to complete the doctoral program, it is a good idea to contact the Graduate Advisor to find out about the application process.
