Checklist

A student visa extension can be a great way to continue studying in the United States for an extended period of time. However, it is important to note that your current student visa must be valid at the time you apply for a new visa and that you need to start planning well in advance.

The student visa renewal process is similar to the initial visa application, but with some additional requirements. You will need to establish that you meet the criteria for a student visa and that you are not intending to immigrate to the United States permanently, and you will need to demonstrate that you have ties to your home country.

During the application process, you will be asked to complete a form called the Application for Student Visa (Form I-591). The information you provide on this form is used to determine whether or not you are eligible for a student visa.

You can complete this form on a computer or you can print it out and hand it in to an international student adviser at the university where you are studying. Be sure to read all the questions carefully before submitting your application.

What to Include in Your Student Visa Extension Checklist

You must complete all the questions on this application form. Be sure to answer each question fully and completely.

If you are a student in Canada, and your Study Permit has expired, you must submit your application for restoration of status to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) within 90 days of the date your status expires.
